  • Build foundational skills with an approachable, activity-based diagnostic chapter that reviews essential skills through modular sections, making it easier to differentiate instruction, reinforce prior learning, and target support where students need it most.
  • Connect literature to contemporary issues through engaging multimodal chapters that pair central texts from British literature with the “Conversation” feature, bringing together three non-fiction texts around a compelling real-world question.

Features

Feedback from hundreds of twelfth-grade English teachers highlighted two priorities: student engagement and relevant skill development. Connections in Language & Literature addresses both with flexible content and practical instruction designed to build essential skills for college, careers, and beyond.

  • Explore British and world literature across every anthology chapter with a flexible selection of texts that allows you to focus on specific literary traditions or take a broader global approach.
  • Build essential reading and communication skills in Chapter 1, “Becoming an Active Reader” through activity-based instruction in close reading, argument analysis, annotation, and active listening.
  • Engage students with six relevant themes designed for high school seniors, including Heroes and Monsters, Fate and Free Will, Nature and Technology, Money and Happiness, Tradition and Progress, and Self and Society.
  • Connect classic literature with contemporary voices through 118 diverse print and visual texts featuring authors such as Shakespeare, Austen, and Woolf alongside contemporary voices like Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and modern translations of Beowulf.
  • Develop practical communication skills with “Writing in the Real World” activities that connect classroom learning to college and career applications, from the college essay and personal narrative to a dedicated Cover Letter and Resume Writing Workshop.
  • Strengthen vocabulary before, during, and after each selection by introducing key terms before reading, highlighting them within the text, and reinforcing understanding through post-reading assessment questions.
  • Extend teaching and learning with On-the-Go Learning in Achieve, BFW’s online courseware that gives you access to Student and Teacher’s Edition e-books, teacher resources, adaptive quizzing, a digital library of full-length works, and interactive assessment tools.

In addition to the features above, Connections in Language & Literature gives students more ways to engage with texts, make meaningful connections, and build essential literacy and communication skills.

  • Explore literary conversations across eras with “TalkBacks” that pair classic and contemporary texts to help students examine connections and different perspectives.
  • Connect literature to real-world questions with “Extending Beyond the Text” sidebars that encourage students to consider contemporary issues and engage with counterarguments.
  • Develop visual literacy through an integrated visual art program featuring fine art, film stills, and infographics that provide additional context for each theme.
  • Build analytical, argumentative, research, and communication skills through varied practice with post-reading questions and flexible “Topics for Composing” prompts that give students multiple ways to respond to and analyze texts.
