With the emphasis the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) places on modeling, Modeling With Mathematics: A Fourth Year Course (Fourth Year 2e) addresses these modeling requirements while exploring how mathematics is ever-present in solving real-world problems. Intended for students fulfilling a fourth year math credit, the Fourth Year 2e program helps solidify students’ understanding by providing a different kind of learning experience. With Fourth Year 2e students model real-world applications with a functions approach netting a deeper grasp of the important concepts necessary for success on the forthcoming Common Core assessments.
Features
5E Instructional Model
The components of the 5E model (Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate and Evaluate) form the backbone of the text and are pointed out in each chapter of the Annotated Teacher’s Edition.
Four Types of Lessons
Each chapter is divided into well-paced lesson that make teaching and learning from the book easier, they are: Activities (group experimentation or data collection); Investigations (group exploration of a concept using pencil and paper); Regular Lessons (direct teaching of math concepts); and Review and Practice (R.A.P.) (skill review exercises for topics taught previously). The various types of lessons help engage students through hands-on learning, and reflect upon and practice what they have learned through integrated exercises that facilitate connections between past and future learning.
Skills Review Appendix
A set of 16 short appendices that provide a short review, with exercises, of key math skills on which students frequently need a refresher.
Stepped-out Examples
Highlighted examples offer detailed, annotated solutions making it easier for students to learn, teachers to teach, and parents to help facilitate their child’s learning.
Annotated Teacher’s Edition
With a wrap-around design and two pages of notes prior to each chapter, the ATE helps teachers prepare daily lesson plans for each chapter as these notes contain the objectives of the lesson, prerequisite skills, new vocabulary, a lesson description, teaching tips, and answers to the questions and exercises for the lesson.
